Before the Second World War, when they were still allowed to lead a nomad life, Gypsy women used to wear gold coins in their hair. They braided their hair with fabric and tied the coins in them.
Some really traditional Gyspsies, like the Kalderash, still do that today, but the coins are not gold anymore.
They used to go from villages to villages, men repairing pots and cauldrons, women were fortune tellers. They had colors and manners that nobody else had. Lots of kids, and a bold and loud way to be that people feared, yet secretly envied.

Aren't they beautiful, and the old photograph with the girl dancing and the wagons. When I was a child I used to love my parents to drive past the gypsies so I could look out for their ponies tethered by the side of the road. They are gone now, it's a shame.
